After absorbing a tough 2-1 loss to Winnacunnet on Friday at The Pasture, the JV1s took to the highway on Tuesday and effectively handled a one-sided contest in a way that made it work for both teams, outscoring Spaulding 9-1.
The Marauders spread the playing time and the scoring around. Derek Lacy got things started in the 4th minute, converting a pass from Henry Aspinwall with his right foot. Three minutes later, Tucker Monson played a ball fro the left side across the 18 to Eric Ringer, who settled the ball and finished for a 2-0 lead. Quincy McBride scored the first of his two goals in the 16th minute, volleying in a cross from Pierce Hamlin at close range. Quincy and Alex Smith then created a nice finishing opportunity for Lacy with some effective ticky-tacky passing. McBride went back to his scoring ways in the in the 25th minute, taking a pass from Mitch Aspinwall and crushing a "bangu".
Mitch Aspinwall scored three minutes later on Alex Smith's second assist of the day, a worm-burning cross, and the score moved to 6-0. The final goal of the half may have been the best goal of the season, as Anthony Maynes trapped a ball with his chest and then hit an impressive volley.
The second half was a different story, as the Marauders respected the game and the opponent, converting to a possession-style game. Spaulding actually scored first in the half when they were awarded a penalty and converted to make the score 7-1. On the ensuing kickoff, Henry Aspinwall played Tucker Monson through on a breakaway, and they pulled the goal back after only seconds. The final goal of the day was claimed by Jake Reznek, who finished after a corner kick to make the final score 9-1.
Last Friday, the Marauders lost a touch 2-1 decision to Winnacunnet in a match played at the Dresden Fields. Hanover took an early 1-0 lead when Henry Aspinwall cracked a shot and Derek Lacy was there to put away the rebound. Winnacunnet tied the game in the 25th minute when a hand ball in the box gave the Warriors a penalty kick, and the conversion made the score 1-1.
Hanover nearly went ahead just before halftime on a wild flurry following a corner kick by Owen Stannard. Pierce Hamlin's volley was saved for another corner, and Alex Stephens' header toward the back post was just saved, and the Marauders got a third corner, which Evan Nichols headed over the crossbar.
Winnacunnet took the lead in the 51st minute on a long free kick from nearly forty yards which eluded Jack Maynes in goal, sneaking just under the bar. The Marauders came close to tying the game in the 55th minute when Eric Ringer hit a shot from the middle over the bar, and even closer in the 68th minute when Ringer's shot hit the upper 90 and bounced down. It was a close call, but the goal wasn't given.
Now 9-4 on the season, the Marauders will have an optional practice at the Pasture on Wednesday at 3:15 on a beautiful, warm afternoon. There is no practice bus, but Coach Willie will be there to run a fin training session. Hanover will host Pinkerton Friday afternoon at 4:00.
