JV2 Plays Well in Season-Opening Loss to Sunapee

The setting and weather for JV2 team's opening game against Sunapee on Thursday  could not have been better, considering the two days of heat which we had endured the prior two days.

The Marauders stepped on the field with a mix of veterans and rookies.  Sunapee came out strong, and made numerous attacks in the Hanover half.  The Hanover defense though found its footing under the leadership of the Noah Phipps and the speed of Max Patyk-Finkel.  Matt Alibozek's poise and steady hands kept the goals out and the score sheet clean.  Hanover started to pressure and get real chances especially at the feet of Mark Ralston-Daniels.

The continued pressure began to pay dividends and the attacking duo of Pierce Seigne and Boris Divitsky created the first goal of the season.  Piece managed to win a ball outside the eighteen and through a flurry of motion took a shot that bounced off the cross bar where Boris drifted in and headed the ball into the back of the net,  much to the joy of the Hanover bench.  The Maruders led 1-0 at halftime.

The second half came with some bad luck and miscommunication where Sunapee managed to get four goals on counters.   Hanover though created lots of chances resulting in a lot of corners, free kicks and quality shots on goal .  The score was tough, but the play was very encouraging for a first game with good moments of play from everyone.   The JV2 has work to do, but it has a good foundation.  They will play their first road game of the season on Wednesday at Fall Mountain, leaving right after school.

Freshmen Win Again, Beating Bishop Guertin 3-1

Playing their second road game in three days, the Marauder Freshmen rallied to beat Bishop Guertin 3-1 to improve their record to 2-0 on the young season.  Here is the account of the game from Coach Dan Robel:

"If the story of the 2018 Hanover Freshmen boys soccer team were to be written after our first two games it would be called "A tale of two halves." After scoring four second half goals on Monday at Memorial to seal a victory, the Marauders found themselves trailing to Bishop Guertin 1-0 at halftime on Thursday. Hanover went down late in the first half when the BG striker managed to best a Marauder center back and was left one on one with keeper Jackson Fisher. Jackson never stood a chance as he spent the entire first half fighting to keep the sun out of his eyes. Offensively, Hanover couldn't quite connect passes and struggled to move the ball up the short pitch. Halftime was a welcome site for the Marauders.

During the break we grabbed our water and found some shade. The only thing missing were the orange slices. They made do without the halftime snacks,  made some important adjustments, and altered the way they wanted to play. 30 seconds into the second half Augie Oberting broke free down the left sideline, then went around a defender and crossed the ball right across the goal mouth. Isak Larusson was streaking in and managed to contort his body to get just enough of his foot on it to direct in to the back of the net,  tying the match at 1-1. Game on.  Hanover had come out with the energy and intensity it was missing in the first half. They would not relent and four minutes later Zane Shiffman sent a clever little pass through a couple defenders to the feet of Eric Tysinger, who from 15 yards out  and shot low and to the corner. The BG keeper managed to get a toe to it but it wasn't enough. Eric's second goal of the season made it 2-1, Hanover. For the next 35 minutes, every single player on the Hanover roster played with great tempo and intensity and kept the pressure on BG, frustrating them and causing them to rush passes or just clear the ball. In the 72nd minute Alex Rockmore battled the Bishop Guertin center back and GK by pressing them relentlessly every time they sniffed the ball, and he was rewarded by winning the ball from them inside their own 18 yard box with only an empty net in front of him and he finished the job to make the score 3-1.

After that the Hanover defense took over and absorbed every attack they attempted to throw at them. It was a great TEAM victory today. Every player played a role in keeping BG under pressure the whole second half and leaving them feeling frustrated."

Next up for the Freshmen (following Friday practice at 4:00) is a home game on Wednesday at 4:30 against Merrimack,  which will allow them to zoom back to HHS (providing homework is done) and watch the Varsity host Merrimack at 6:00 on the turf.

All Marauder players on all teams are invited to play a little pickup soccer on Friday during Activity Period.  The HHS Indoor Sports Club offers pickup 5 v 5 soccer in the Gym every Tuesday and Friday.  Come check us out!

Back to Normal - Let the Games Begin

We have weathered the weather and the start of school, and these are the days that we have been waiting for.  In the next two days all four of our teams will each get to play, and three of us will open the season.

On Thursday, the Freshman and JV2 teams will be in action.  38 members of the freshman class will be in action!  The Freshmen will depart school after 6th period, change quickly in the locker room, and depart for Mines Falls Park in Nashua to take on Bishop Guertin, looking for their second win of the season.

The JV2 team will host Sunapee at 4:30 at Dresden.  After school they will have a bit more time to change, and meet the practice bus at 3:45 (we hope) for the trip to Dresden.  Parents will be responsible for transportation after the match.

The JV1s will also bus over to Dresden (those not flaunting newly-acquired driver's licenses) and train from 4:00 (ish) to 5:30 to prepare for BG. The practice bus will return to HHS after JV1 practice is over.

The Varsity will train on the turf from 7:15 until the lights go off.  Could be 9:00, could be.................
nah, we'll end at 9:00

The JV1 and Varsity players need to remember to contact their period 7 teachers on Thursday to secure permission to leave early on Friday.  They will depart for BG after 6th period.

Let the matches begin!  Honor the beautiful game!

Hot Weather Alters Wednesday Schedule

The hot weather predicted for Wednesday has occasioned several changes to the schedule:

The JV2 game against Sunapee will be moved to Thursday, with a 4:30 kickoff.

All three subvarsity teams (Freshmen, JV1, JV2) will practice at Dresden from 5:00 - 6:30.   There will be no practice bus after school.  Students will be dismissed at 2:00, and need to provide their own transportation to and from practice.

The Varsity will train from 6:00 - 7:30 at the HHS turf.

Hot Weather Forces Schedule Changes

The predicted unseasonably hot weather has prompted several schedule changes for the Marauder teams.  The Varsity and JV1 games at Exeter on Tuesday have been postponed until Wednesday, September 26th.  The JV1 will play at 5:00 and the Varsity will play at 6:30.  Both teams will train on Tuesday at Dresden from 5:00-6:30.

The Freshman team will have Tuesday off.

The JV2 team will meet at school at 2:00 in the athletic hallway to receive their uniforms, and then train at Dresden from 4:00 -5:30

Wednesday's training and game schedule will remain the same, pending weather updates.  The JV2 team will host Sunapee at 4:30 at Dresden to open their season.

Freshmen Open The Season With a 5-0 Win at Memorial

The Marauder Freshman Soccer Team had the honor of being the first of Hanover's four squads to play a regular-season match, and they succeeded in every respect, going on the road and beating the Manchester Memorial freshmen 5-0.  First-year Coach Dan Robel offers the following account:

"It was definitely game number one. Hanover got off to a very slow start. There were a lot of missed connections, and very little chemistry for the first 25 minutes. We tried to keep players subbing in twos by position so they were always on the pitch with someone they had been playing with to help players get comfortable with each other and build chemistry.

By the 25th minute we managed to break through when Alex Rockwell won a 50/50 ball up top with only the keeper to beat and buried it. That was it for first half scoring and even through the remainder of the first half we still struggled to find that chemistry.  By the start of the second half we had had essentially two full rotations of two full teams and you could see keeping the players with the same linemates really started paying dividends. Passes started connecting, and confidence started growing.

In the 52 minute, Jack Ross buried an absolutely beautiful shot that caught the upper 90 from the 18. No keeper could have stopped it. Four minutes later, Oscar intercepted a ball in the Memorial box and from 16 yards out, turned his hips and went top corner. The keeper got a fingertip to it but it wasn't enough. The ensuing kickoff was intercepted and Connor Hamlin took the ball to the corner, dropped the cross on the six where Eric Tysinger found the back of the net with his head. Finally, in the 64th minute, Murphy Hunt took a great pass from Charlie Birkmeyer in the box, executed a one touch trap, next touch shot and put it right between the keeper's hands. It was hit too hard for the Memorial goalie to have a chance.

On the other end Palmer Okai , Daniel Jaccaci and James Kirkpatrick did a great job shutting down any Memorial offensive threats, making it a boring day for Jackson Fisher in goal, except on two different plays. Memorial sprung a player and twice Jackson aggressively came out and challenged the breakaways and both times forced the shots wide. Final score:  Hanover 5, Memorial 0."

The Freshmen will take Tuesday off, and train Wednesday after school.  The practice bus will leave at 3:00, allowing an hour after dismissal to do a little homework.  On Thursday, the team will leave school after 6th period (having made sure to ask permission from 7th period teachers the day before) and play the Bishop Guertin Freshmen at 4:30 at Mines Falls Park in Nashua.

Hot Weather Forecast - We Will Be Ready

The weather forecast for the coming week suggests that temperatures will be in the 90s Tuesday and Wednesday in particular.  We will be taking every precaution to make sure that our games on these days are played in safe conditions.  There are several things players can do to help with this.  Players should begin hydrating before the game, and eat a banana or two (for the cramp-reducing potassium). Players are still responsible for their own water, and should bring more than usual.  Gallon or half gallon jugs (labeled with the player's name) make sense.

We will alter our coaching style in these games, in a way that actually aids us.  We will be subbing with regularity, and monitoring players when the come out of the game for any signs of heat illness.  Because our squads are large and our rosters are deep, this will actually be a competitive advantage for us.  Win-win.

We are always committed to "safety first" for our players, and this week's games will be no exception.  Don't forget sunscreen in your equipment bags!

Away Game Procedures

As we begin to plan for several of our teams to play road games this week, here is a review of several of the policies we have.  Some are a repeat from Wednesday night's Parent/Player Meeting, some is expanded information.

All teams travel by bus to away games.  We try to minimize missed classroom time.  If a student has an away game, he needs to touch base with his teach at least the day before to ask permission (always granted), and ask how to make up missed work and assignments.

We have had a wonderful response to the request for parents to help organize snacks for the bus trips.  We are still looking for a parent or two for the JV2 team, but they don't travel until the week after next.  Any takers?  Typical bus snacks include water and/or Gatorade, enough for each player to have to (one coming and one going), bagels and spreads (let us know about peanut butter allergies), energy bars, cookies, and fruit.  We usually have one banana each before the game, and another fruit (apples) afterwards.  There are several snacks that don't work well, including tangerines or clementines  (peels always find the floor of the bus)  Goldfish and other bits (bus floor). On longer trips, the Varsity and JV1 will occasionally have pizza or Subway.  We do not stop for fast food on the way home from trips. Fast food is expensive, time consuming and bad for you (unless you love megadoses of sodium).

Thanks as always for your support.  We're eager to start playing games next week!

Marauders Wrap Up Preseason, Beating Essex 5-1

Hanover finished off their preseason schedule with an impressive 5-1 victory against a good Essex team in front of an appreciative crowd at Merriman-Branch Field on Thursday night. The Marauders now turn their thoughts to preparing for their first regular season game on Tuesday at Exeter, a matchup of two Division One title contenders.

Thursday's game against Essex was billed as a matchup between perennial powers, and in the early going it was an even contest, with two stout defenses limiting chances on goal. Hanover's back four of Dillon Bradley, Kyle Doucette, Noah Pikielny and Dylan Kotlowitz did an excellent job of possessing the ball, and allowing the midfield of Matty Gardner, Liam Collins and Charlie Adams to gain a territorial edge. 27 minute into the match, Hanover took a 1-0 lead when am Essex defender under pressure from Charlie Adams cleared the ball into his own goal. It appeared as though the game would continue to a tight contest, until the Marauders exploded for four goals in the final eight minutes of the half, taking a shocking 5-0 lead.

Dillon Bradley started the maroon tsunami, decisively heading home a Liam Collins free kick. Collins then scored, finishing off a neat give and go with Charlie Adams. Christo Dragnev finished off the onslaught, taking an Adams lead pass to finish off a shot on the right side of the box, and then blasting a 30-yard laser, with Adams collecting his third assist. It was a stunning display of offense, an the second time in four days that Hanover had scored five times against a Division One Vermont opponent.

Impressively, Hanover continued to play very well despite extensive substituting in the second half. 26 Marauders saw in action during the game, a clear expression of the depth and quality on this year's Hanover squad. Coach Grabill added a cautionary note after the match, saying, "This was a good showing, but we clearly have a lot of room for improvement. We are trying to be a bit better each day, and have managed to make progress throughout preseason.  We have a lot of work in front of us, and a number of clear challenges coming up. Exeter is clearly a top team. We have lost to them the last two times time we have played, both at home, and now we have to play them on the road. We're hoping to make good use of the next three training sessions before we hit the highway on Tuesday."

Marauders Teams Prep For Openers: Varsity Hosts Essex

With all four Marauder teams formed and tested, we're turning the corner and settling into the regular-season routine of afternoon/evening training once a day.  All four open their seasons next week, and though there is still a lot of logistical work to do (uniforms, photos), we'll be ready for the start of the season and the start of school.

Thursday and Friday will be regular training days for all subvarsity teams at The Pasture (Dresden).
Monday will be uniform (and perhaps photo) day for all teams.  The Varsity will host Essex on the HHS turf Thursday at 7:00, and train on the turf Friday and Sunday.

Thursday's Varsity scrimmage against Essex will be a great dress rehearsal for the Marauder Varsity, who ended their stay at Windridge on Tuesday with a 7-1 victory over U-32 High School from Barre.
Having scored 14 goals in three games against relatively modest opposition, Hanover will now face a strong D1 squad in Essex, a perennial Metro League power.

We'd love to see a lot of the subvarsity players at the match.  It's a great chance to see what we're trying to accomplish in terms of style of play and attitude on the pitch.  Here's what to look for:
Hanover has a great combination of experience and youth.  The Marauders return an impressive 17 lettermen from last year's 13-4-1 squad, including their two top scorers, Charlie Adams  (11 goals, 13 assists) and Liam Collins (12 goals and 9 assists).  Adams was a First Team All-State selection, the leading vote-getter at striker.  Christo Dragnev  tied for fourth in team scoring with 5 goals. Matty Gardner, the only freshman receiving All-State honors (Honorable Mention) will join Collins and Adams to form the best midfield in the state. Injuries to seniors Bauti Gallino and Nico Mayo-Pushee have put a dent in Hanover's striking power, but returning attackers Blake Palmer (4 goals), Eli Stack, Latham Allison, and Aiden Rowley will be joined by first-year players Caleb Benjamin, Patrick Osborn and Amane Matsuoka.  The Marauders have a ton of depth at center midfield, having added Toño Correa, Will Blinkhorn, Nathan Subrahmanian.

Hanover is equally strong in the back.  Center backs Dillon Bradley, Kyle Doucette and Gary Li all had a ton of playing time last year.  Noah Pikielny started nine games at left back, and will be joined on the back line by veterans Brendan Brigham and Colm Seigne, and newcomers Judd Alexander, Ethan Ross and Dylan Kotlowitz.

The Marauders have both talent and depth in goal.  Senior Hans Williams and junior Joey Perras each started nine games last year, collecting 8 shutouts between them.  They will be joined by junior Andrew Enelow, who had a great record last year on JV1, and established himself as a Varsity keeper during preseason.

Come take a look tomorrow, and don't forget to circle Wednesday, Sept. 5th,  Hanover's home opener, also under the lights at 6:00 p.m.  See you at Merriman-Branch Field.  Finally, if you're still reading, we would love to have you bring a non-perishable food item or two  (peanut butter, soup, spaghetti, cereal) for The Haven's food pantry.  We will be collecting food (and money! Check to:  The Haven)
at every home game, and are aiming for a full ton by the end of the season.  Help us get started!

Subvarsity Rosters Announced - Busy Day Wednesday

The rosters for the Junior Varsity 1, Junior Varsity 2 and Freshman teams are posted below.  Team training will continue this week in preparation for the opening games of the season next week.  All four HHS teams will open the season, beginning next Monday.  Team schedules were finalized today, and will be published shortly.

Tomorrow is an important organizational day for all of the teams.  All players planning on playing this fall will have concussion screening in the morning, following the schedule posted in the weekly schedule here in blog. Players will test by class, not by team, beginning with the freshmen at 9:00.  Testing will be done in the Training Room, located in the athletic hallway outside the gym.  We will make sure the back entrance to the gym is open. Some older players with schedule conflicts will also be tested at 9:00.  Following testing,  players will receive their away white uniforms.  Players will wear their uniforms to practice at Dresden from 4:00 - 6:00.  If the weather is good, team photos will be taken at practice.  (The Varsity will train on the turf from 2:00 - 4:00).  Practice will be held rain or shine, except if thunderstorms are expected.

Following practice, all players and parents are invited to the program organizational meeting in the HHS Auditorium at 6:30.  The meeting will take 42 minutes.  Important information about team policies and procedures will be discussed.

Training Camp Report - Wednesday Meeting Set

For the past eight years, the Varsity has traveled to the Windridge Tennis and Sports Camp in Roxbury, VT, soon after the team has been named.  They scrimmage two or three quality Vermont opponents and spend time getting to know each other and bonding as a team.  It's evolved into a cherished tradition, particularly the evening campfire, complete with s'mores.

Monday's trip to Windridge has worked very well thus far.  The weather has been warm but not oppressive, the opposition has been good, and the results have been impressive.  The sleepy Marauders beat Northfield/Williamstown 2-1 in 9:00 a.m. game on a dewy field.  Charlie Adams opened the scoring, and Latham Allison iced the game with a goal that made up in accuracy what it lacked in velocity.  Hans Williams made several good saves to earn the win in goal.  After a hearty chicken dinner, Hanover trudged down to the field  (probably in the best shape ever) and squared off a strong Burr and Burton team.

Burr and Burton had worked hard in their morning game against Essex, and has less rest.  Even taking that into account, Hanover's 5-0 victory was impressive.  The Marauders led 1-0 at halftime on a goal by Aiden Rowley, and then scored three high quality goals in 20 minutes to impose themselves on the opposition.  Charlie Adams had a rip from the top of the 18, Gary Li FINALLY scored on a corner kick header from Liam Collins, and Christo Dragnev continued his impressive run of preseason goal scoring, taking an adroit pass from Adams and slotting home his third tally of the preseason.

Even when Hanover subbed, they continued to dominate.  The Marauders maintained their  edge in possession and scored a fifth goal late in the game, a sweet left-footer from Toño Correa from the top of the box that tucked just under the crossbar.  Hanover outshot B&B 21-3, and could have scored another five goals were it not for the acrobatic efforts of the B&B keeper.  Props to the midfield trio of Adams, Collins and Matty Gardner, who are already in midseason form, and itching to play longer stretches. The Marauders also got excellent play from Varsity first-year players Amane Matsuoka, David Stoffel, Will Blinkhorn, Ethan Ross, Nathan Subrahmanian, Dylan Kotlowitz, Judd Alexander, and Patrick Osborn.  All got significant minutes. This is a deep, deep, talented team.

Tonight, we will have a team meeting, watch film, and then fire up the campfire, sit in a circle, hold hands, and sing "Kumbayah".  Well, maybe not the last two.  Tomorrow morning we'll arise too early, eat too much breakfast, and then play U32 from Montpelier before returning home.  Estimated time of arrival is 1:49, give or take.

Now the most important news for all players and parents (and thus subject to repeat):  The Mandatory (if possible Parent-Player meeting will be this Wednesday at 6:30 in the HHS Auditorium.  The idea is that the subvarsity teams will finish their practice at Dresden at 6:00, head across the river, and be on time for the meeting at HHS at 6:30.  We hope you can attend.  There will be door prizes.

Hanover Prepares for Week Two of Preseason

The second week of preseason will have a different look, as we finish the team selection process and continue to prepare for the opening of the season the following week.  We will publish a schedule for the entire week on the blog later Sunday evening.

The Varsity will depart for their overnight at Windridge in Vermont at 7:00 a.m. Monday, and return Tuesday at 2:00.  There will be a packing list at the end of this post.  Hanover will play Williamstown at 9:00 on Monday,  Burr and Burton at 2:00 Monday afternoon, and U32 at 10:00 on Tuesday morning.

All candidates for the three subvarsity teams (JV1, JV2, and Freshman) will have tryouts at Dresden on Monday and Tuesday from 10:00 - Noon.  We expect to welcome a number of new faces. and will continue the process of player placement, which we hope to complete by the end of the day Tuesday.  All teams will spend Wednesday morning at the high school, doing required impact testing, receiving uniforms, and taking team photos.  The Varsity will train that afternoon on the HHS turf, and the three subvarsity teams will train at Dresden.

We are planning to have a mandatory meeting for all parents and players at HHS on Wednesday or Thursday.  We are waiting for confirmation from the school for time and location, and will link it with the end of practice time on that day, so we can minimize trips to and from soccer activities.  The meeting will allow us to introduce the coaching staff, discuss team policies, and hear from Athletic Director Megan Sobel.  If you attended this meeting last year (or for the last 10 years, Gantrish family) you still need to attend).  Thanks for your patience with the late notice for this meeting.

We are getting plenty of hits on the blog, and appreciate that you are developing the practice of checking every day.  Stay tuned for the new weekly schedule later this evening, and for Varsity instructions for Windridge:

Marauders Announce 2018 Varsity Roster

This is the 2018 Hanover Varsity Roster.  Following a week of tryouts and scrimmages,  the decision-making process, involving four coaches and two Captains, was challenging but systematic and fair.  We have acknowledged last spring that we have over 40 varsity-level players in the program.  The scores from the JV group scrimmages bear this out.  Congratulations to those who are on the team.
Many others could have been there, and you are obliged to demonstrate that you are worthy of the trust placed in you.  Departure for Windridge is at 7:00 sharp Monday morning.  Further instructions will follow.
